Qixi Emoji Combinations: Get the Set Right, Cut the Flirting Stage in Half
A four-stage map of Qixi emoji combinations, from the first message to the long-term couple. Each stage has a different cost for getting the emoji wrong, and a different combo that lands cleanest.

Qixi is the largest emoji consumption day on the Chinese internet.
Not the largest message day. The largest emoji day.
On this day, from the person you just added on WeChat, to the couple who have been together three years, everyone is figuring out one thing: what emoji to send that is not too deliberate, but still gets the meaning across.
A lot of people die at this step.
You meant "I have liked you for a long time". They read "good morning". You meant "I saved that message you sent". They read "oh".
Emoji use on Qixi is a real-time exam with no standard answer.
But it has rules.
Stage 1: just met, the window is not yet broken
The core principle at this stage: give them a step down, do not give them pressure.
Love letter plus slight smile.
Together these are the safest combination for "I noticed you". Not a direct declaration. It says "I saw what you posted, and I liked it".
If the other person is interested, the conversation continues. If they are not, the combination does not freeze the room.
Cherry blossom plus see-no-evil monkey.
The standard secret-crush combo.
Cherry blossom means "I have something to say", see-no-evil monkey means "but I cannot say it out loud".
Both of you know what it means. Neither of you has to spell it out. The essence of the flirting stage lives here.
Peek-through-fingers plus heart-with-arrow.
Use when you want to confess but you lost your nerve.
Peek-through-fingers is the nervousness. Heart-with-arrow is the flutter. The combination reads: I have feelings, but I am scared of messing this up. Figure it out.
If the other person also has feelings, there is a good chance they take a step forward here.
Stage 2: flirting stage, testing the response
The core principle shifts at this stage: send a signal, wait for them to catch the ball.
Crescent moon plus sparkling stars.
Late-night sends hit three times harder than daytime.
Crescent moon means "I thought of you at this hour", sparkling stars means "you are special to me".
Together they are the unspoken "I cannot sleep because I am thinking of you".
Face-without-mouth plus melting-face.
You want to say something but the words will not come.
Face-without-mouth is "I have something", melting-face is "forget it, never mind, figure it out yourself".
People who send this combo are usually not refusing to say it. They are waiting to be asked. In the flirting stage, this combo is the perfect test of whether the other person cares.
Kiss mark plus sparkles.
This combo is an explicit signal.
Kiss mark is the kiss, sparkles is the boost. Together they mean "I want to see you".
Sending this takes some nerve. If they catch it, the flirting stage is basically wrapped.
Stage 3: together, the first Qixi after the label
The first Qixi after you got together is the dividing line for emoji use.
Send it too cool and you signal that you are not taking this seriously. Send it too full and the other person feels pressure.
Rose plus kiss mark.
Rose is the classic rose, kiss mark is intimacy. Together they are the signal "I am taking this relationship seriously".
As long as the other person is genuinely trying to be with you, the combo leaves no room for misreading.
Hug plus holding-back-tears.
Use when you have not met yet, or when you are long-distance.
Hug is the embrace, holding-back-tears is the gratitude. The combo reads: I cannot hug you, but I am grateful you are in my life.
The undisputed king of Qixi emoji for long-distance couples.
Two-hearts plus wrapped-gift.
Two-hearts is affection, wrapped-gift is ceremony. This combo is for public moments, posting on Moments, or tagging them in a group.
When both show up, you are confirming something in front of everyone.
Stage 4: long-term couple, before the seven-year itch
For an old married couple on Qixi, the worst move is using the same combo you used when you first got together.
Send two-hearts and they will think you are completing a task. Send rose and they will wonder if you did something wrong.
Orange-heart plus fire.
Orange-heart means "I like you as a person, not only the relationship". Fire means "the attraction is still there".
Receiving this combo after two years together hits harder than receiving two-hearts when you first started.
Relieved-face plus brown-heart.
You have reached the stage where one look tells the other person everything.
Relieved-face is contentment, brown-heart is the long river. The combo reads: I do not need to prove anything, I am just comfortable being with you.
Saying it out loud has less impact than sending the emoji.
Eyes plus tear-off-calendar.
This combo is a code: "Do you remember what day it is today?"
Tear-off-calendar adds weight to "the day", eyes is the cue to look up.
By the time they figure it out, you have already won half the round.
One reminder that matters most
Every combination above depends on the same thing: who is sending it, when, and what came before.
The same two-hearts sent right after adding each other on WeChat, and three days after a cold-war fight, carry opposite meanings.
The same crescent-moon-and-stars combo, sent at 3pm reads as "I am thinking of you", sent at 2am reads as "I cannot sleep because I am thinking of you".
Emoji is never a standalone symbol. It is part of the context.

Generate Qixi combos →Frequently asked questions
Is there really one "right" emoji combo for Qixi?
No. There is a small number of combinations that consistently land well at each stage. The right one for you depends on who you are sending to and what came before. Use a stage map as a starting point, then adjust for your specific situation.
What if I send the wrong one?
Send a follow-up message clarifying your intent. One sentence is enough. Most emoji misreads on Qixi are recoverable if you acknowledge the ambiguity quickly. Letting the silence stretch is what damages things.
Should I match my partner emoji style exactly?
It helps but it is not required. If they send a single red heart, you can send the same or escalate a little. If you escalate too far past their style, it reads as pressure. The safest move is to mirror their intensity, then add a little.
What if we are not "official" yet but we both know?
That is stage 2. Use the stage 2 combinations. Sending stage 3 emoji before the relationship is labeled feels presumptuous to one of you. The label comes when it comes. Your emoji can signal readiness without forcing it.
